Virginia Berasategui interview

One of the brightest star of triathlon world  is Virginia Berasategui.Virginia_Berasategui3She is multiple World and European Champion in triathlon and duathlon and still capable to improve. In 2009 she achieved her best at the triathlon World Championships in Kona-Hawaii, she took the broz medal!Beside this she won the European Long Distance Triathlon Championships in Prague, the Avia Wildflower Triathlon in California and Kaiser Bonn Triathlon.

Congartulations for your last season virginia.First would you speak about about Kona please?
I had just realised my dream of being on the podium, since I am 12 years old.It wasnt my best swim, but I didn't lose concentration, doing a really good bike (2nd split) and good run. Yes,the secondplace was really close, but now I have bigger motivation in training for not losing that place next time.
How was the European Chahmpionships in Prague?Virginia_Berasategui_5
What can I say,I won,so I was really happy with my race and feelings. I just missed better organisation, not only during the race, also around it. There was no advertisement inPrague, nobody knew about a European Champ in their town,so there were not many spectators, just family, friends or people from the team...I dont win such titles every day,and I would have liked to share it with more people.
Would you tell us few worlds about your season?
Probably my best season. Nine races,8 wins and third place in Hawaii. But for me,the most important thing of this year , is that I was healthy and enjoyed every day of my training and life like never before, and that made me stronger, giving me a lot of confidence in myself.
Can you give some advice about appropriate dyet for a long distance  triathlete?Virginia_Berasategui2
I think I am not the best for that..I mean,in the past I tried different kinds of diets,vegetarian,macrobiotic..but now I e at everything that is clean and healthy and I mean everything! I try to eat 4 or 5  meals a day not too big. But if sometimes I need a beer, glass of wine,o r something sweet,I take it.I think it is hard enough every day (with so much training and so on),to be also denying ourselves some pleasures...Sometimes we need to feed "our soul"
How much do you train a week in mid-season?
The hardest week was 20k swim,21 hours bike, and 80k run. It c an seem to be not too much for ironman traiining, but I usually don`t train too long (just sometimes on the bike),but with some intensity. A lso I concentrate on quality,stretching,gym,stabilisation...I do a lot of work out of the pool, bike, and run.
How do you supplement during race?
That`s a point I have to improve. I eat bars with carbo and also with amino during  the bike, and then during the run only gels. It used to  work, but in Hawaii, maybe because of the heat and so much iso-drink, I always have stomach problems, with diarrhoea during the run. This year was the worst, suffering a lot,and most of all the last 12 km after the Energy Lab,when it was so hard to keep the rhythm knowing that someone was coming from behind. So this year I am trying to fix  these with  MULTIPOWER and my friend Björn,who are looking for the best suplement that could work for me.
